1/3 of Nursing Home Residents Experience Neglect Within 35 Days

There was a study conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services that looked into neglect and abuse in nursing home facilities. The study showed that 1/3 of all residents in nursing homes suffer from neglect or abuse within the first 35 days of being admitted.
The types of neglect or abuse seen within this about of time include:
- A medication error
- An infection
- A medical injury

- $136 million has been spent on hospital visits that were link to preventable injuries and errors since just August of 2011
To help moving forward, the Department of Health and Human Services has suggested that the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) make a list of events that can help reduce the harm to residents. State agencies should review the practices within the nursing home that are meant to identify and reduce the harmful events. Our elderly loved ones should be cared for carefully and with compassion.
